To Raise a Glass, or Down It

Gary Bunting

Fuzzy Outtakes

I don’t really drink

I don’t really know what kind of drunk I am

But yesterday I got slightly tipsy

Slightly squiffy on red wine

Turns out I’m an introspective drunk who

Cries at Whitney Houston songs

I mean, those notes, y’know?

I found myself hypnotized

My eyes drawn to the brake lights

Burning on the cars ahead of us

Have you ever seen the Manhattan skyline at midnight?

When your wide eyes are drawn to every single light

Their reflections quivering in the East river

The Brooklyn Bridge like a Chinese dragon

Fire breathing across the glittering black, sparkling black water.

My legs felt like Velcro unhooking

My head like popped bubble wrap.

I wrote a haiku

In my head but now it’s gone

The greatest haiku?

I guess we’ll never know

But I’ll guess not.

Oh these fuzzy outtakes

Water tower mosaic images

Neon cakes and wires shaking

Seating, standing

Standing seating

Bacon sandwiches, pop tambourines beating

A thimbleful of sleep in the passenger seat

I laugh at a sign as we pass a garage closed for the night

It says ‘Lube Entrance’ in pink neon lights
