Morning Sun
My eyes squint at the morning sun,
my hair tied back in a little bun.
No warmth of an arm around my waist,
no one to kiss with my morning breath distaste.
No giggles while smothering you in tickles,
reality sinks in of a bed sheet to myself
filled with your riddles.
I can’t feel your heartbeat so close to mine
that it follows in sync,
Because everything disappeared in the
brisk of a blink.
My nose wakes up stuffy from the morning sun,
only now without the scent of a newly loved one.
Dead Flowers
An internal electric shock every time someone has your hair,
sometimes people are shots instead of cups
and it’s not really fair.
Time isn’t what heals,
distraction is the real deal.
But that’s not what I want,
that’s if I’m being upfront.
We’re all a lost cause,
looking for someone to make time pause.
I really thought I found my remote,
but here I am instead—
writing this meaningless note.
I don’t mean to sit here and gloom,
but it’s you that left me with dead flowers
I once thought would bloom.
SKYLAR HENDLER (she/her/hers) is a senior at the University of Florida majoring in Criminology and philosophy on the pre-law track. In between fulfilling my obligation on law executive boards and mock trial team practices, Skylar writes poetry in her notes app to help cope with all the emotions that come with being a woman dating in college. She started songwriting when she was only a couple of years old but soon discovered poetry as another means of expression.
