Te Lezen Bij Sneeuw
Een paar hoeken om en je staat in de stilte
op een bodem, tussen oude muren, lagen metselwerk
in zomaar een winter. Uit de tijd gestapt.
Het vriest. Kinderen - theemutsjes op lompe beentjes -
rapen takken en sneeuw van de grond net zoals zij
eeuwen geleden deden tussen de stenen
het gemetselde lapwerk in het zwijgen van het hof
waar als je goed luistert ijle stemmen misschien
de flarden van iets mateloos naar het heden zingen.
Dat is nu, vandaag. Het schemert al. De kinderen
spelen zoals ze spelen, omringd door tijd
waar jij niet bent. Jij kijkt naar hun herinneringen.

To be read when snow falls
Take a few corners and you’re on a stone floor
in the silence, among old walls, layers of mortar
in simply a winter. Stepped out of time.
It’s freezing. Children – tea-cosies on short blunt legs –
collect twigs and snow from the ground, just the way
it was done ages ago among the stones
the mortar patchwork in the silence of the court
where airy voices if you listen carefully may be singing
the fragments of ‘measureless’ toward the present.
That is now, today. It’s twilight already. The children
are playing the way they play, surrounded by time
where you are not. It’s their memories you watch.
