Felix was blank
met bruine haren en een zachte g.
En: hij was kleurenblind, hij keek met scheef
getild gezicht en toegeknepen ogen naar de lucht.
Ik deed het heimelijk na. Wat heb ik hem bemind
toen ik vijf jaar was. Hij was negen.
Er is een bruine foto van ons allen aan de waterkant
gezeten in het gras, en daarop houd ik vlak
boven zijn hoofd, zijn verend haar mijn hand,
kijk met ZIJN toegeknepen ogen (onherroepelijk kleurenblind)
omhoog, je ziet de ouders en de kinderen en de zomerwind
die het gras scheef waait en in al die haren woelt -
je ziet dat ogenblik dat toentertijd nog eeuwig was.

Felix was white
with brown hair and a light dialect
And: he was color-blind, his face looked lop-
sided and his eye squinted at the sky.
I copied that secretly. How dearly I loved him
at the age of five. He was nine.
There’s a brown picture of us all by the waterside,
sitting in the grass, where I have my hand right
above his head, his bouncing hair, and
looking up with his squinting eyes (definitely color-blind),
seeing the parents and the children and the summer wind
that blows the grass aslant and fumbles in so much hair –
the instant shows that eyeblink, still eternal at the time.
