luster. The appearance of a surface in reflected
light. It depends principally upon the relative
smoothness (texture) of the surface and upon the
refractive index, which governs the amount of light
reflected. Schiller, play of color, orient and other
such optical phenomena are distinct from luster,
but luster is related to sheen. See adamantine
