Elaine Verdill
Dinosaur Pond
These winter hens
Come cluck to the waterhole
Flutter their feather dust all the way
Too invalid to lay their eggs
Their old walnut-brains just keep on glaring
Proud direct descendants of T. Rex
Or his cousins’ stone bones
Eggs from the old landscape
When the dustbowls were mighty tar pits of dare
These winter hens
Cluck around the nested ponds
Migrate west to east, walkabout
Fluffed to the winds and spring traditions
Daffodil chicks
Brighten this old farm
Campaign Cat
as the cat domesticated
the feral canine, he
explained
there is no translation of dog into
the feline world view
and then they got along fine
now I tell the cat
it’s impossible for him
to run for city council
just to see what he will do
